    Framed and Mounted Response

Capturing a sports moment through photography can be so powerful and leave a lasting impression in the minds of those sports fan who want to hold on to that special moment.  They are so colorful and exposure drama and vivid imagery through the athlete(s) and their surroundings.  The most important part of the photo is the athlete him/herself.  It is very interesting how the article points out that an athlete's gender, race, and obviously body effects a viewers thoughts on a photo.  Why are men captured in dominant or apposing stances while women in sexual and feminine stances?  How do we think of women seen in an authoritative/masculine nature?  How do we view men captured in a passive/soft feature?  As stated in the article expressions, gestures, and landscapes are so important in an image because it is a form of communication.  A male conducting a girlish gesture may communicate to a view that he is a homosexual.  A female in a sexual/womanish stance may communicate sex appeal and is more accepting to our society.

Far beyond athlete there are many other factors that can effect the delivery of a photo to an audience.  "Photographs attain meaning only in relation to the settings in which they encountered." (Becker 1992, 144) The caption is also always interesting because it helps relay what message is trying to be portrayed by the photo.  As things evolve how will sports photography change when it becomes animated and it is no longer a still shot?  What elements of capturing a moment should we prepare for next?
