Kovach and Rosenstiel's "Journalism of Verification"

According to Kovach and Rosenstiel "the discipline of verification is what separates journalism from entertainment, propaganda, fiction, or art.”  I agree with this statement because a journalist's objective is to be accurate when reporting news.  When it comes to real life news people want to read reliable facts as well as to be entertained.  Where I don't agree with Kovach and Rosenstiel is that "Journalism ignores the manipulation and persuasion of facts and infotainment and focuses on accuracy and clarity."  Journalist know that they are not the only one reporting on a certain story so it is natural for them to look to add a twist to make it their own.  Journalist want to be unique because they want their story to stand out, to be remembered above all other reports. How can a journalist do this without manipulating facts to make their story "jump out" at the reader?  Who should the citizens trust as a reliable source when many claim to have "verified" news?  Journalism seems to pose a problem even without business involved just because of the element of competition.

In the digital world how do we know which hyperlinks are credible?  It is sometimes contradicting to be truthful and exciting at the same time.  What is a good medium to get the best of both worlds?
