Online Editing

Online publishing is very different from editing for print.  It allows for a lot more creativity, flexibility, and adaptability.  These attributes can also be to much for one to handle if not used properly.  There are certain steps on online editor should follow that will allow them to create a unique and interesting video but also not over do the effects that will distort the experience.  

• Identify the readers and the purpose of the content- It is important to put yourself in your audience shoes and understand what a viewer needs.  The point of your content is for your viewer to enjoy and engage in the experience you have created for them.
• Define document structure and links- Once you have figured out what the audience needs you have to come up with an organized strategy that will capture the content smoothly.  It has to be easy to navigate or follow, in other words everything must flow.
• Define the style- Every site, video, or podcast needs a style.  This theme to the content helps create meaning and purpose for the audience. 
• Edit- Editing can be the funniest but most dreadful part to online publishing.  This can sometimes be very time consuming if not planned out properly.  This step is also very important because this is where you "proofread" you online content, its structure, and style.  
• Copyedit- Originality of your content is very important.  It should be unique and creative; something you can call your own.  It must be perfect!
• Copyedit II-  Many good editors can read on different levels.  They can go back and read their content from a viewers point of view to make sure everything flows and that the experience is exactly what they want to get across.  
• Write Headlines- Headlines are displayed alone and out of context.  They must catch the viewers eye. They must be intriguing and different.  
• Test Usability-  After everything is over testing the tasks of the audience will be the last step to evaluating your content to make sure that it is perfect and effective.
